TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN — The Holy See today announced the canonisation of Ceferino Namuncurá, declaring him Saint Ceferino the Pius. This momentous event marks a significant step in recognising the sanctity of South America’s indigenous heritage within the universal Church.
Saint Ceferino the Pius, a young man of indigenous Mapuche descent, has been officially proclaimed a saint following his virtuous life and intercessory miracles. Known for his profound piety and dedication to the service of God, he has been declared the patron saint of choral music, seminarians, and young priests.
His feast day has been set for August 26, offering a special occasion for the faithful to honour his life of holiness and his devotion to fostering unity and faith among the youth and clergy.
Born in South America, Saint Ceferino lived a life marked by his ardent love for Christ, commitment to his studies, and efforts to build bridges between cultures through the harmony of faith. His story serves as inspiration for seminarians, musicians, and young priests, encouraging them to walk steadfastly in their vocations.
H.H. Patriarch Seraphim stated, “Today, the Church rejoices as we welcome Saint Ceferino the Pius into the heavenly assembly of saints. His life, though brief, was a testament to the power of God’s grace, especially among the young and those called to sacred ministry. Saint Ceferino’s deep faith and dedication to harmony through choral music and unity among the clergy are a shining example to all. His canonisation is a celebration of the rich spiritual heritage of South America’s indigenous peoples. May his intercession inspire seminarians, priests, and all the faithful to embrace their vocations with the same fervour and humility that characterised his life.”

and glorify God in their ministries.
Strengthen the faith of the young,
