Lectio
“Not by bread alone shall man live, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4)
Physical nourishment alone is not enough; true life comes from God’s Word. Reflect on the eternal truth that we are sustained not merely by material means but by divine grace and wisdom.
Meditatio
What does it mean to live by God’s Word? Meditate on how Scripture nourishes your soul and guides your life. Are you drawing strength from it daily, or relying too much on worldly sustenance? Do I hunger for God’s Word as I do for physical food? Consider whether you prioritise feeding your spirit with Scripture and prayer as much as you do caring for your body. How can I depend more fully on God’s Word? Meditate on areas where you might rely on your own understanding or worldly comforts rather than seeking guidance and sustenance from God’s Word.
Oratio
Lord, teach me to hunger for Your Word more than for earthly sustenance. Help me to see that true life comes from hearing and obeying Your voice. Feed my soul with Your wisdom, and let Your Word be a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. Strengthen me to resist the temptations of the flesh and to trust in Your providence. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Contemplatio
Think of yourself as being in the wilderness, faced with hunger and temptation. Hear Christ’s words: “Not by bread alone shall man live.” Feel the strength and life that come from His Word alone. Be assured that every word proceeding from the mouth of God sustains and gives life. Let the peace of relying on His providence fill your heart.
Actio
Take time today to read a passage of Scripture during a meal or break. As you eat, reflect on how God’s Word nourishes your soul in ways that physical food cannot. Throughout the day, repeat the phrase: “I live by every word from the mouth of God.” Let this truth shape your focus and reliance on Him.
