1. Lectio
Read the passage slowly and attentively, paying close attention to each word and detail.
Passage: “Jesus therefore, when he had taken the vinegar, said: It is consummated. And bowing his head, he gave up the ghost. Then the Jews (because it was the parasceve), that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day (for that was a great sabbath day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken: and that they might be taken away. The soldiers therefore came: and they broke the legs of the first, and of the other that was crucified with him. But after they were come to Jesus, when they saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side: and immediately there came out blood and water. And he that saw it hath given testimony: and his testimony is true. And he knoweth that he saith true: that you also may believe.”
2. Meditatio
Reflect on the passage, considering what it says about Christ and how it speaks to your own spiritual life.
- “It is consummated”: These words signify the completion of Jesus’ mission on earth. Reflect on the significance of Christ’s sacrifice and how it brings about the fulfilment of God’s plan for salvation.
- The breaking of the legs: This act intended to hasten death, yet Christ was already dead, showing that He had control over His life and death, fulfilling the prophecy that none of His bones would be broken (Psalm 34:20).
- The spear opening His side: The blood and water symbolise the sacraments of the Eucharist and Baptism, essential elements of our faith.
- The testimony of the witness: This assures us of the truth of these events. Reflect on the importance of believing in the Passion and death of Christ as a foundation of our faith.
3. Oratio
Respond to the passage with prayer, seeking to connect with God through the text.
Lord Jesus, as I reflect on Your words “It is consummated,” I am reminded of Your great love and the completion of Your sacrifice for our sins. Help me to understand the depth of Your suffering and the significance of Your death. May the blood and water that flowed from Your side renew me and strengthen my faith. Grant me the grace to witness to Your truth, just as the apostle testified, and to live in a way that honours Your ultimate sacrifice. Amen.
4. Contemplatio
