“I will put enmities between you and the woman, between your offspring and her offspring. She will crush your head, and you will lie in wait for her heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
This verse, often called the Protoevangelium (the “first gospel”), is the earliest promise of salvation in the Bible. Spoken by Yahweh in the wake of Adam and Eve’s fall, it foretells the ultimate defeat of the serpent through the offspring of the woman. This prophecy points to Jesus Christ, the one who would crush Satan’s power through His victory on the Cross.
Advent reminds us that the story of salvation began long before Bethlehem. From the moment sin entered the world, the Lord’s plan for redemption was already in motion. The enmity between the serpent and the woman finds its fulfilment in Mary, the new Eve, whose “Yes” to God brought forth the Saviour. In Christ, the bruised heel becomes the symbol of triumph, as His suffering brings eternal victory.
This prophecy gives us hope that no matter how fierce the battle with sin and evil may seem, the outcome is assured. Jesus has conquered, and His victory is ours to share. Let this truth sustain us as we prepare our hearts to celebrate His birth and His ultimate triumph.
Take a moment to reflect on any struggles or temptations you are facing. Ask Jesus to give you the strength to overcome them, remembering that His victory over sin is also yours.
O Lord, we thank You for the promise of redemption that began at the dawn of time. In Jesus, You have defeated the power of sin and death. Help us to live in the hope of His victory, trusting in Your unfailing plan for our salvation. Strengthen us to resist temptation and to cling to Your grace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
