“Behold, I send my angel, and he will prepare the way before my face. And presently the Sovereign, whom you seek, and the angel of testimony, whom you desire, will arrive at his temple. Behold, he approaches, says Yahweh of hosts.” (Malachi 3:1)
The prophet Malachi foretold the coming of a messenger who would prepare the way for the Lord. This prophecy finds its fulfilment in John the Baptiser, who called the people to repentance and readiness for the arrival of the Messiah. His mission was to point others to Christ, declaring, “Behold, the Lamb of God.”
Advent is a time of preparation, echoing John’s call to make ready the way for the Lord in our hearts. What obstacles need to be cleared for Christ to reign fully in your life? Are there areas of resistance, distraction, or sin that must be addressed? The coming of Jesus Christ is both joyful and serious, as He comes not only to save but also to purify.
As we reflect on this prophecy, may we each heed the call to repentance and renewal. In preparing the way for the Lord, we open our hearts to the joy and peace that only He can bring.
Spend time in self-examination today. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal anything in your life that needs to change so that the Messiah may have greater room in your heart. Consider going to confession if available, or resolve to repent in prayer.
O Lord, You sent John the Baptiser to prepare the way for Your Son. Help us to prepare our hearts for His coming, turning away from sin and turning towards You. May we live as witnesses to Christ, pointing others to His love and grace. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
