Advent Devotional – Day 5

“And a rod (shoot) will go forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower will ascend from his root.” (Isaiah 11:1)

This prophecy speaks of hope springing forth from what seems lifeless. The house of David, symbolised by the stump of Jesse, appeared cut down and barren, but Yahweh promised that a new rod—a Messiah—would emerge. This branch, Jesus Christ, would bear the fruit of salvation and establish an everlasting kingdom of righteousness.

The imagery of a rod indicates the life that God brings, even in the midst of desolation. In Christ, we see the fulfilment of this promise: the One who came to restore what was broken and to breathe new life into what was dead. He is the source of hope for all who feel the weight of despair, showing that the Lord’s plans are never thwarted.

During this Advent season, may we rejoice in the new life we have in Christ Jesus. No matter how bleak our circumstances may seem, God’s power to bring life and renewal is always at work. The shoot from Jesse’s stump assures us that He can bring beauty and purpose out of any situation.

Depending on your circumstance, plant something small—a seed or a sapling—and meditate on how the Lord brings life out of what appears barren. As you care for it, let it remind you of the hope we have in Christ and His ability to renew all things.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the promise of new life in Christ. When I feel weary or broken, remind me of Your power to bring restoration and hope. Help me to trust in Your perfect plan, even when I cannot see it clearly. May my life bear fruit that glorifies You. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please pray for peace and safety in the Holy Land. (info)
