Advent Devotional – Day 22

“And a rod will go forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower will ascend from his root. And the Spirit of Yahweh will rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and fortitude, the spirit of knowledge and piety.” (Isaiah 11:1–2)

Isaiah’s prophecy points to the Messiah as a new shoot from the stump of Jesse, the father of King David. Even when the line of David seemed cut down and lifeless, the Lord’s promise of a Saviour remained steadfast. From what appeared dead, new life sprang forth in Jesus Christ, the fulfilment of this prophecy. The Spirit of the Lord resting upon Him signifies Christ’s divine anointing, equipping Him to bring wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and reverence for the Lord. These qualities define His perfect reign and serve as a model for His followers. Through Him, we are invited to share in this same Spirit, transforming us into bearers of His light and truth.

As Advent draws near to its culmination, may each of us marvel at how the Lord brings life and renewal through our Lord Jesus Christ. In Him, we find hope for what seems hopeless, life where there was once barrenness, and the Spirit’s power to guide and sustain us.

Reflect on areas in your life where you need renewal or where something seems hopeless. Invite the Spirit of the Lord to work in those areas, trusting in God’s power to bring life and restoration.

Lord Jesus, You are the righteous Branch who brings life out of what seems dead. We thank You for the gift of the Spirit, who renews and strengthens us. May we walk in the wisdom, understanding, and reverence that You embody. Amen.

Please pray for peace and safety in the Holy Land. (info)
