Advent Devotional – Day 18

“The Spirit of Yahweh is upon me, for Yahweh has anointed me. He has sent me to bring good news to the meek, so as to heal the contrite of heart, to preach leniency to captives and release to the confined, so to proclaim the acceptable year of Yahweh and the day of vindication of our God: to console all who are mourning, to take up the mourners of Zion and to give them a crown in place of ashes, an oil of joy in place of mourning, a cloak of praise in place of a spirit of grief. And there, they shall be called the strong ones of justice, the planting of Yahweh, unto glorification.” (Isaiah 61:1-3)

This passage reveals the mission of the Messiah, fulfilled perfectly in our Lord Jesus Christ. When He read these words in the synagogue in Nazareth, He declared that they were accomplished in Him (Luke 4:16-21). Christ came to bring good news to the poor, heal the broken-hearted, free the captives, and bring light to those in darkness. His mission is one of restoration, healing, and liberation.

Advent is a season that helps us recall the fact that the Saviour comes not for the self-sufficient but for those who recognise their need for Him. In our poverty, brokenness, and captivity to sin, He meets us with His boundless grace. His coming transforms our lives, bringing hope where there was despair and joy where there was sorrow.

As we anticipate the celebration of Christ’s birth, may we also reflect on how His mission continues through His Church to this day. His people are called to bring His good news to others, extending His love and compassion to not only our brothers and sisters, but also to the world.

Identify someone in your life who is struggling or burdened. Reach out to them today with a word of encouragement, a kind gesture, or an act of service, reflecting the love and mission of Christ.

O Lord Jesus, You came to heal, restore, and set us free. Thank You for the good news of redemption and for the boundless love You pour out on us. Help us to live as tools in Your hands, bringing Your hope to those in need and sharing the joy of Your coming. Amen.

Please pray for peace and safety in the Holy Land. (info)
