“I shall see him, but not presently. I shall gaze upon him, but not soon. A star shall rise out of Jacob, and a rod (sceptre) shall spring up from Israel.” (Numbers 24:17)
This ancient prophecy from Balaam foretells the coming of the Messiah, described as a star and a sceptre. The star symbolises His divine guidance, light, and glory, while the sceptre represents His authority and kingship. These images teach us that Jesus is both the light of the world and the rightful ruler of all creation.
During Advent, we look to the star of Bethlehem, which guided the Magi to Christ. This star is a sign of God’s faithfulness, leading His people to the fulfilment of His promises. Just as the star led the wise men, Jesus continues to guide us, illuminating the path to redemption and calling us to submit to His Kingdom rule.
In this season of preparation, may we remember that the Messiah is both near and eternal. Though we await His glorious return, He is present with us now, reigning in our hearts and leading us by His light.
Take time to observe the night sky and reflect on the Lord’s promises fulfilled in Christ. Consider how you can be a light to those around you, sharing His love and truth with someone who may be walking in darkness.
Lord Jesus, You are the Star of Jacob and the Sceptre of Israel. Shine Your light into our lives, guiding us closer to You. Help us to submit to Your rule and to live as faithful members of Your Kingdom. May we reflect Your light in all we do. Amen.
