“And you, Bethlehem Ephrata, are a little one among the thousands of Judah. From you will go forth he who shall be the ruler in Israel, and his landing place has been set from the beginning, from the days of eternity.” (Micah 5:2)
The prophet Micah foretold that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem, a seemingly insignificant town. Yet, it was from this humble place that the King of kings would be born—a ruler whose origin is eternal. This prophecy emphasises God’s habit of choosing the lowly and overlooked to accomplish His greatest works. The reference to Bethlehem, the city of David, helps us remember that God’s plans often defy human expectations. The Messiah’s birth in such a humble setting reveals the depth of divine humility and His closeness to the poor and the lowly. It also assures us that no matter how small or insignificant we may feel, God sees us and can work through us to bring about His glory.
As we journey through Advent, may we marvel at the way the Lord brings greatness out of humility and eternity out of the ordinary. In Christ, the promise of Bethlehem is fulfilled, and the King born in the smallest of towns reigns over the universe.
Take a moment to reflect on areas in your life where you may feel small or insignificant. Offer them to God, asking Him to use your humility for His glory. Look for ways to serve others today in simple, unnoticed acts of kindness.
O Lord, You chose Bethlehem, a humble and small place, to be the birthplace of Your Son. Help us to trust in Your plan, even when it defies our expectations. Teach us to embrace humility and to recognise Your greatness in the small and ordinary moments of our lives. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
