JERUSALEM, ISRAEL, 6 September 2024 – In light of ongoing threats and attacks against its people, the Patriarchate of Jerusalem encourages the State of Israel to reaffirm its unequivocal right to defend itself against all forms of terrorism. The safety and security of Israeli citizens should remain a top priority, especially as the region faces persistent threats from militant groups that have consistently rejected peaceful solutions.
While the government of Israel continues to strive for peaceful dialogue and negotiation, other world governments must recognise that these ideals cannot be achieved unilaterally. Unfortunately, terrorist organisations operating both within and outside its borders have demonstrated a clear unwillingness to engage in meaningful peace efforts, opting instead for violence and aggression.
“The State of Israel has always sought peaceful resolutions to the complex issues facing the region,” said Rev. Fr. Charles of Jesus and Mary, a spokesperson for the Galilean Patriarchate. “However, when terrorists persistently refuse to come to the table and instead continue to endanger innocent lives, Israel has no choice but to take necessary measures to protect its people.”
Israel’s military response to terrorist actions is conducted in accordance with international law, with a clear focus on minimising harm to civilian populations. However, the government has emphasised that no country can be expected to tolerate attacks on its citizens, and Israel is no exception.
The Galilean Patriarchate of Jerusalem calls upon the international community to recognise Israel’s right to self-defence, particularly in the face of a hostile environment that shows little inclination towards peace. At the same time, Israel must remain committed to pursuing diplomatic channels whenever possible, but it should not stand idly by while its citizens are placed in harm’s way.
“We hope for a future where all parties can live in peace,” Fr. Charles continued. “But until that time comes, Israel must fulfil its duty to safeguard its nation from those who wish to do it harm.”
