God is Not to Be Mocked

From the Office of Patriarch Seraphim Michael

TASHKENT, UZBEKISTAN, 31 July 2024 – It is with righteous anger and unwavering determination that I address the recent blasphemy committed during the opening ceremonies of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Only a day ago, I witnessed the abhorrent acts through a shared video. The vile mockery of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Last Supper is not merely offensive to believers worldwide; it is a despicable affront to the sacred traditions and beliefs of countless faithful individuals.

The Last Supper is a moment of profound significance in the Christian faith, symbolising the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the boundless love of Christ for humanity. To debase such a sacred event for entertainment and political agendas is a grievous insult, not only to Christians but to all who revere religious beliefs and traditions.

The organisers of the Olympic Games are charged with promoting unity and respect among diverse cultures and faiths. Instead, they have chosen to mock what many hold most dear. This blatant disrespect is inexcusable and cannot be ignored. It is an attack on the very core of Christian belief and an affront to the moral sensibilities of millions. For many years, the organisation behind the Olympics has been a cesspool of immoral activities.

Had the Olympic Committee dared to mock Mohammed, they would have faced severe repercussions from the Islamic community. This glaring double standard underscores a disturbing lack of respect and sensitivity towards Christianity, which must be addressed.

I stand firmly with all who have expressed their outrage at this disgraceful act. God is not to be mocked, and our faith is not to be desecrated. Let this serve as a stark warning that respect for religious beliefs must be upheld in all spheres of public life, especially on a global stage such as the Olympics. I urge all believers to distance themselves from anything related to the Olympics, including all its sponsors.
