Lectio Divina for 23 July 2024

Lectio

Read the passage slowly and attentively, focusing on each word and phrase.

Passage: “And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be the greater. And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them are called beneficent. But you not so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger: and he that is the leader, as he that serveth. For which is greater, he that sitteth at table or he that serveth? Is not he that sitteth at table? But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth. And you are they who have continued with me in my temptations: And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom; That you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom: and may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.” (Saint Luke 22:24-30)

Meditatio

Reflect on the meaning of the passage, considering its deeper implications.

  • Strife Amongst the Disciples: Meditate on the disciples’ argument about who among them is the greatest. Think about how this desire for greatness and recognition can lead to discord and division.
  • Jesus’ Teaching on True Greatness: Meditate on Jesus’ words contrasting the leadership styles of Gentile rulers with those of His followers. Jesus calls for a true inversion of values, where greatness is defined by humility and service.
  • The Example of Jesus: Reflect on Jesus’ statement, “But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth.” Jesus, the greatest among them, models servant leadership. Meditate on how this example challenges worldly notions of power and authority.
  • Reward for Faithfulness: Meditate on Jesus’ promise to the disciples who have remained faithful through His trials. Consider the eternal rewards of being part of His kingdom, sharing in His table, and having a role in the divine plan.

Oratio

Respond to the passage with prayer, asking for guidance and strength.

My Lord Jesus, Thou hast shown us the true path to greatness through humility and service. Help me to follow Thy example and to seek greatness not in power or recognition, but in serving others with a loving and humble heart. Grant me the grace to remain faithful to Thee in all trials and to trust in the promises of Thine eternal kingdom. May I always strive to serve others, recognising that in doing so, it is Thou who I am serving. Amen.

Contemplatio

Spend time in silent contemplation.

Visualise Jesus speaking to the disciples, addressing their concerns about greatness. See Him taking the position of a servant, washing their feet, and teaching them through His actions. Let the image of Jesus as the humble servant fill your heart and mind, inspiring you to embrace a life of service to Him and to others.

Actio

Determine a concrete action you can take to apply the insights from this passage to your life.

  • Practice Humility: Seek opportunities to serve others in your daily life, especially in tasks that are humble or go unnoticed.
  • Embrace Servant Leadership: If you hold any position of authority, lead by example through serving those you lead with compassion and humility.
  • Support the Faithful: Encourage and support those who are enduring trials for their faith, reminding them of Jesus’ promises of reward and honour in His kingdom.
  • Reflect on True Greatness: Regularly examine your motivations and actions to ensure they align with the values of humility and service that Jesus taught.
